Description

Organic Pearl Barley is like a warm hug on a cold day.

Organic Pearl Barley is similar to Organic Pot Barley, but it is softer and more absorbent which makes it perfect for pudding.  It makes us think of cold nights by the open fire with a warming soup.

Barley is one of the oldest grains consumed in the world and was a staple during medieval times.  Pearl barley is milled to give it a soft texture and a pearly white appearance.  Barley is a versatile grain with a soft texture similar to pasta once cooked.

Organic Pearl barley provides an important range of vital vitamins and minerals including selenium.  One 120g serving is a source of Niacin (B3), Manganese and Selenium.  Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function, immune system function, and the maintenance of normal nails and hair.  Additionally it protects cells from oxidative stress and contributes to spermatogenesis which is why it is linked to fertility.

If you want to get the best from pearl barley then soak it to remove the phytic acid and then cook it down into a warming pudding or soup.  If you prefer the sound of using a more al dente barley for salads and stews then choose our organic pot barley  – this variety is milled for a very short time so has the whole hull and the germ intact.
