It is a very versatile spice mix that can be used in anything from stir fries, barbecue dishes, gravy, sauces, baking, rice pudding and many more. Just sprinkle some while cooking, mix it into marinades, or even dust a little over roasted veggies for an extra kick.

Chinese Five Spice Sticky Tofu

You can use this Chinese seasoning in all kinds of dishes. Stir-fries, roasted meats (chicken, beef, prawns, etc), marinades, even desserts. But one that really stands out is sticky tofu. This dish takes the bold, aromatic flavours of five spice and coats tofu in a rich, glossy sauce that’s packed with umami. It’s a simple way to turn tofu into something really delicious.

Method: Sauce

  1. Wrap the tofu in a clean tea towel and put some heavy cook books on it to press it.
  2. Add the organic corn starch to a pan and add the vinegar, stir to remove any lumps.
  3. Add the other sauce ingredients and stir well.
  4. Place over medium-low heat and stir until it becomes thick. It will take about 10 minutes. Once thick turn heat down and keep warm while you make the tofu.

Method: Tofu

  1. Cut the pressed tofu into ½ inch cubes.
  2. Mix the organic Chinese five spice and salt into the organic corn starch.
  3. Toss the flour mix with the the tofu cubes and coat every cube.
  4. Heat a non stick frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil.
  5. Once pan is very hot, add the tofu. Cook until golden brown and crispy on all sides,
  6. Add sauce to the pan to coat the tofu, and cook for a couple of minutes until sticky
  7. Enjoy!

For optimum freshness keep in a cool place away from moisture and direct sunlight.  Store in a tightly sealed bag or container.
