Whether you are a seasoned baker or a newbie, we have flour to help you on your way. It is easy using organic flours in everyday baking.
Why use organic flour?
Most crops are cultivated using a range of commercial pesticides that are known to be harmful to the body. One of the more well known pesticides used in grain farming is glyphosate.
‘Tests by the Defra Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF) found that almost two thirds of wholemeal bread sampled contained glyphosate. Government figures show glyphosate use in UK farming has increased by a shocking 400% in the last 20 years.
In addition to its use as a normal weedkiller, its manufacturers advise farmers to spray their wheat with glyphosate to kill and dry the crop, making it easier to harvest.
Glyphosate’s manufacturers insist the levels in our food are safe. But a report by the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that glyphosate is a ‘probable carcinogen’. Research published since the IARC report suggests there is no safe level of glyphosate in food.’ The Soil Association
Organic farming on the other hand, uses only a small range of naturally occurring products. All pesticide use is severely reduced on organic farms. Soil Association organic farmers are able to use just eight, derived from natural ingredients, but only under very restricted circumstances. This makes organic farms a haven for wildlife and provides homes for bees, birds and butterflies. In fact, plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

Ancient Grains
If you are confident at baking and like experimenting with new flours then you should try some of our denser ancient grains. Our Organic Einkorn Flour is an ancestor of durum wheat. It was among the first cereals cultivated and is said to have been developed over 20,000 years ago in the Middle East. Our customers say it is actually lighter than wholemeal flour, so this is a great first one to try. If you like making sourdough then try using our organic emmer flour as your starter and then bake with it too. Emmer Flour has been a really popular addition to our range with a great flavour and texture for bread.
We have a full range of organic flours to help you get the perfect bake.
